Matt Overend / recent paintings at if ART Gallery, 1223 Lincoln Street, Columbia SC. Matt Overend is a native of Las Vegas who grew up in Atlanta and has lived in Smoaks, S.C., since 1981. In the past two years, he has had solo exhibitions in Hilton Head, Camden, Charleston, all in South Carolina, and in Charlotte, N.C. Overend in 1973 graduated as an aerospace engineer at Georgia Tech before studying art at Santa Barbara City College in California, the Univ of California at Santa Barbara and Yale University. A fun night out at the studio! We invite you to bring a beverage of your choice and a sense of adventure as we guide you to create a functional or decorative hand-built project from clay slabs. You may choose to work from a pre-made design or create something totally original! Your project will be bisque fired in our electric kiln and available for pickup the following week. Children's Pottery Day Camps for the month of June & July 09. Basic hand-building techniques, including pinch, coil and slab, and will be able to see a wheel-throwing demonstration on the last day of the session. Greenville sculptor in exhibition SURFACE at the BAG Gallery in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn. Surface is a collective view of the land we inhabit. The work in this show represents contemporary artists' interpretation of landscape. Exhibition runs March 20 through April 2, 2009. Aside from the Senior Action membership fee ($24/year that entitles members to participation in all of Senior Action's classes, activities, and trips) there are no fees, and the 25% consignment is due only upon sale, so the artist/crafter has no out of pocket expense to participate. He spent two days with our Photography student demonstrating the acrylic lift technique of black and white photographs. His connection with the students was immediate and the students came away with another tool that will make them more competitive in an increasingly challenging world." ---Roy Fluhrer, Director FAC. Mark E. Flowers earned his BFA in Studio Arts from The University of South Carolina in 1977 and his MFA in Painting from Western Michigan University in1979. Mark's work can be found in 23 public and over 250 private collections. His art teaching career parallels his art making. He has taught art at the secondary and postsecondary levels for more than 27 years. While he has been a teacher of art, he has also chaired two fine arts departments and one painting department. His most recent teaching award is the Allen Zearn Distinguished Teaching Award at Mercersburg Academy where he has been for the last 18 years. While pursuing dual careers, he has served as a town councilman, volunteer firefighter, Little League baseball coach and president of a community recreational board. Along with his artist/wife, Kristy Higby, they have raised two sons, Carson and Morgan, who are now off learning to be artists themselves. Examples of Mark and Kristys work can be found on their website at mountainteastudios.com He and Kristy, his wife, recently purchased a hand-made log cabin just north of Asheville, NC in the community of Alexander. They are now commuting between their teaching jobs in Pennsylvania and their new home. Soon they hope to be full time residents of the creative community of Western North Carolina. Thursdays 6:30 at the Greenville County Museum of Art Thursday evening programs are free. The Art Museum is open Thursday evenings 6:30 until 8:00 pm to give convenient access to programs and exhibitions. . Parking is free after 5:00 pm and all day Saturdays and Sundays.
